What is Counselling?

People seek counselling for many reasons. Some may be upset by what is happening in their lives now, or be troubled by the past. Others may feel anxious, confused or depressed for a reason that may or may not be obvious, and unable to see the way ahead. Counselling gives you space and time to pay attention to these feelings, and work through them to enable you to live in a more satisfying and resourceful way.

A counsellor will try and support you in this process by listening attentively and without judgement. Together you may identify connections or see patterns of which you had been unaware, enabling you to think about your options and make informed choices.

We offer an initial block of four sessions. During this time you will talk through your issues with your counsellor and think together about whether it would be helpful for you to continue with further counselling at the Centre.

Confidentiality

What you tell your counsellor is confidential, and you can expect what you say to be treated with sensitivity, respect and discretion. However, in order to ensure the quality of counselling, all counsellors have regular consultative support. Identifying details of individual clients are withheld.

In very exceptional circumstances it may be helpful to involve a third party. Counsellors and clients discuss this together beforehand.

Client records with names, addresses and telephone numbers are kept in a locked filing cabinet, and are only accessed by your counsellor, or the counselling manager to pass on messages.
